Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (1987) – Anime Review

You might’ve stumbled upon this anime while trying to gain knowledge on Megami Tensei after playing some games (Persona probably) or maybe you’re just trying out some 90’s anime.Ohara_LokiAbout the Anime:

Older Shin Megami Tensei games didn’t have “Shin” in their names and their stories weren’t original. They were based on novels named “Digital Devil Story”, written by Aya Nishitani. This anime is based on the first entry of DDS series.

Yumiko, who happens to be the reincarnation of Izanami, gets transferred to Juusei Academy, where she meets Akemi, a hierarchically powerful student who does rituals in which he sacrifices women (his teacher and classmates) to summon Loki. When he succeeds in summoning however, Loki betrays him ( ;__; ). After that, Akemi discovers he’s actually the reincarnation of Izanagi and decides to battle Loki. I know, very cliche and predictable, but it worked great as a game story in the 90’s. Animation and action scenes are average for 1987. Akemi flies around on Cerberus and fights a god with his metal sword.

Cute, right?

Is it worth it?

If you want to learn about the first Megami Tensei‘s story, watching this anime would be a better option than playing the game since it sums up the whole story in only 45 minutes, but otherwise I don’t think it’s worth it.

My Score: 38/100
